Wilma Ligthart began her career in the theatre, where she appeared with the internationally well known Dogtroep and this experience shines through in her work as a filmmaker. Wilma studied Directing at the New York Film Academy . She finished the Media Academy in Hilversum, specialising in the fields Documentary and Interview.
Wilma created the following drama-productions or the VPRO ( Dutch Broadcast station) ; Valley of the Dolls, Sprookjes van de Zee, and De Hondenshow. She filled the parts of director, scenarist en also played the leading role. She was invited by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to make a documentary about the airplane disaster in Amsterdam titled ‘ When the plane crashed ’ won the Cinekid award , Prix Danube and Unicef award with it. A slew of documentaries followed; several were awarded. Wilma Ligthart is considered a leading figure in children’s documentary in the Netherlands. Her films are shown on Dutch TV, at International Filmfestivals, and at the IDFA on a regular basis. Her preferences are taboo subjects, where people recognise themselves but would rather not speak out personally. Some of her subjects were ageing as a teen, obesity, lovers pain, trauma processing and ‘ the first time ’. Wilma was selected for the IDFA workshop of Jan Vrijman and IDFA ‘s Kids & Docs workshop with Menna Laura Meijer.
